چکیده
background: mammographic density has been recognized as a risk factor for breast cancer, but the association between potential effective factors and mammographic density has not been fully studied in asian women. we conducted a study to investigate the association of mammographic breast density with several menstrual and reproductive characteristics. m ethods: screening mammography was performed in women above 40 years attending the breast clinic of arash women’s hospital, tehran, iran, for breast cancer screening. the densities were classified by two expert radiologists according to the parenchymal mammographic classification system of the american college of radiologists. those with a history of breast cancer or renal disease, recent hormone replacement therapy, or consumption of vitamin d supplements were excluded. results: overall, 823 patients were assessed. mammographic density was associated with higher age at first birth (p < 0.001), lower parity (p < 0.001), bmi (p < 0.001), and premenopausal status (p < 0.001). however, no associations were observed with age at menarche (p = 0.057) and menstrual pattern (p = 0.973). conclusions: our study showed an association between mammographic density and age, parity, bmi, and age at first birth, and no association with menstrual pattern in terms of regularity and age at menarche. in addition, mammographic density was significantly higher in premenopausal women.

association of mammographic density with pathologic findings
results in patients with high breast densities, malignant cases (61.2%) were significantly more in comparison to patients with low breast densities (37.3%) (p= 0.007, or=2.66 95% ci=1.29-5.49). after adjusting for age, density was associated with malignancy in age groups <46 years (p=0.007), and 46-60 years (p=0.024) but not in age group >60yrs (p=0.559). adjusting for menopausal status, densit...
متن کاملMammographic density changes during the menstrual cycle.
The ability to detect small tumors is impaired in dense mammograms. It has been suggested that the sensitivity of mammograms could be lower in mammograms obtained during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. We examined the change in mammographic density from the follicular to the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle in 11 women. Although the average increase in densities was quite small (1.2...

OBJECTIVE Few studies have examined the association between breast density and breast cancer tumor characteristics. We examined the association between hormonal, proliferative, and histologic tumor characteristics and mammographic breast density in women with breast cancer. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional analysis in 546 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer to evaluate the assoc...
متن کاملAssociation of Mammographic Density with Pathologic Findings
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world and is the first cause of death due to cancer among women. Mammography is the best screening method and mammographic density, which determines the percentage of fibro glandular tissue of breast, is one of the strongest risk factors of breast cancer. Because benign and malignant lesions may present as dense lesions in mammog...
متن کاملDifferences in measured mammographic density in the menstrual cycle.
BACKGROUND In premenopausal women, the sensitivity of screening mammography for detecting breast cancer has been reported to be greater in the follicular phase than in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which may be due to differences in mammographic density. To examine this possible effect, we compared mammographic density in premenopausal women who had mammograms at different phases of ...
متن کاملMenstrual cycle variation in mammographic breast density: so who cares?
So who cares? Is it really important that there is a 4% excess in the proportion of women with mammographically ‘‘extremely dense breasts’’ in the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle compared with the follicular phase? For that is what White et al. (1) have clearly shown in this issue of the Journal in a study based on an analysis of 2591 menstruating women who had screening mammograms in a hea...
